Introduction

Sarcosine (N-methylglycine) is a natural amino acid found in biological tissues that may have significant nootropic This sweet-to-the-taste amino acid occurs naturally as as an intermediate in the conversion of choline to glycine, and is also a byproduct of glycine breakdown.

Sarcosine is present in almost all biological materials, has no known toxicities and is found in many common foods such as turkey, legumes, ham and eggs. Not only is sarcosine critical to the synthesis and composition of muscle, it is the primary metabolic source of components of living cells such as serine, creatine, glutathione and purines.

Sarcosine is involved in a plethora of metabolic processes in the human body, but one of the more intersting mechanisms is its ability to naturally raise testo terone levels when combined with D-Aspartic Acid (DAA). This type of a stack has been popularized by such products as E-Pharm TestForce 2.

Sarcosine also acts as a Type 1 glycine transporter inhibitor and glycine agonist; supplementation will increase glycine concentrations in the brain and thus cause increased N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activation that results in nootropic effects. Clinical trials have shown that sarcosine supplementation improves symptoms of depression and Schizophrenia.
